Buy a Half Cow or Whole Cow in Redding

Here’s the part that surprises most people: you’re not buying packages of beef, you’re buying a share of an animal. One of ours, raised on open pasture here on the ranch and harvested right here on our own ground. Nothing is bought in, nothing is shipped in from elsewhere, and nothing sits in a warehouse in between.

You’ve got two options. A whole beef, which fills a freezer for a family for the best part of a year. Or a half, which suits most households and is where the majority of our Redding customers start.

We only harvest against a complete whole order, so if you just want a half, no problem, we keep a first come, first served list and pair you up with someone taking the other side. It happens all the time, and plenty of people come as a pair anyway: two families, one animal, split at pickup.

How the order works

Once you’ve placed your deposit, we book your harvest date.

If you’ve never done this before, say so. We do this every day and will walk you through every decision on the phone. There’s no wrong answer. It’s your beef.

After the harvest date, the butcher will call when it’s cut, wrapped and boxed, and you drive up to collect it. You’ll be dealing with the same people the whole way through.

Why people drive from Redding

Because grass fed, grass finished beef isn’t really something you can rely on finding at home. And because there’s a difference between a label and knowing the person who raised it.

Our cattle are on grass their entire lives, never grain finished, no hormones, no antibiotics. They’re harvested between 24 and 30 months, which is slower than the industry runs. That patience is a large part of why the beef tastes the way it does.

Directions to Our Ranch From Redding

In order to get to our ranch from Redding CA you’ll have to head onto the I-5 S and take exit 2A from Ca-44E. Follow the I-5 to Ca-36 E which is located in Red Bluff. Take exit 649 from I-5 S. Continue on Antelope Blvd and then take CA-99 S to Shasta Blvd and you’re there! The journey should take approximately 45 minutes each way, traffic dependent of course!

What You Get and What It Costs

On cost, there are two payments and it’s worth understanding both up front. The animal is paid to us, a deposit locks in your harvest date, and the balance is paid after harvest. Then the cutting, wrapping and packaging is paid straight to the butcher when you collect. All in, a half beef comes to $2,800–$2,900 and a whole to $5,100–$5,200, depending on the size of the animal.

Freezer space

Plan on 8–12 cubic feet for a half, 16–22 for a whole. Size up rather than down. Packing real boxes into a real freezer wastes more room than the arithmetic suggests, and it’s a miserable thing to discover at nine o’clock at night with 400 lbs of beef in the back of the car.

Is it actually cheaper?

You pay less per pound than you would for grass finished beef in a grocery store, and the difference is biggest on the expensive cuts.

You do pay it all at once rather than a bit each week, and you need the freezer space ready before your beef is.

What you get is a freezer full of beef for the year, from an animal you know the history of, cut the way you asked for it.
