Here’s the part that surprises most people: you’re not buying packages of beef, you’re buying a share of an animal. One of ours, raised on open pasture here on the ranch and harvested right here on our own ground. Nothing is bought in, nothing is shipped in from elsewhere, and nothing sits in a warehouse in between.
You’ve got two options. A whole beef, which fills a freezer for a family for the best part of a year. Or a half, which suits most households and is where the majority of our San Jose customers start.
We only harvest against a complete whole order, so if you just want a half, no problem, we keep a first come, first served list and pair you up with someone taking the other side. It happens all the time, and plenty of people come as a pair anyway: two families, one animal, split at pickup.
Once you’ve placed your deposit, we book your harvest date.
If you’ve never done this before, say so. We do this every day and will walk you through every decision on the phone. There’s no wrong answer. It’s your beef.
After the harvest date, the butcher will call when it’s cut, wrapped and boxed, and you drive up to collect it. You’ll be dealing with the same people the whole way through.
Because grass fed, grass finished beef isn’t really something you can rely on finding at home. And because there’s a difference between a label and knowing the person who raised it.
Our cattle are on grass their entire lives, never grain finished, no hormones, no antibiotics. They’re harvested between 24 and 30 months, which is slower than the industry runs. That patience is a large part of why the beef tastes the way it does.
San Jose to the ranch is a trip of 218 miles, but it should take about three and a half hours. Take I-880 north out of San Jose towards Oakland, then cross the Carquinez Bridge on I-80 towards Vallejo. From there, follow I-505 north to join I-5, and stay on the interstate all the way up through Williams, Willows, Orland and Corning. Leave I-5 at Red Bluff, take CA-99E south, and Los Molinos is around eleven miles further on, with Shasta Blvd signposted as you come into the town.
On cost, there are two payments and it’s worth understanding both up front. The animal is paid to us, a deposit locks in your harvest date, and the balance is paid after harvest. Then the cutting, wrapping and packaging is paid straight to the butcher when you collect. All in, a half beef comes to $2,800–$2,900 and a whole to $5,100–$5,200, depending on the size of the animal.
Plan on 8–12 cubic feet for a half, 16–22 for a whole. Size up rather than down. Packing real boxes into a real freezer wastes more room than the arithmetic suggests, and it’s a miserable thing to discover at nine o’clock at night with 400 lbs of beef in the back of the car.
You pay less per pound than you would for grass finished beef in a grocery store, and the difference is biggest on the expensive cuts.
You do pay it all at once rather than a bit each week, and you need the freezer space ready before your beef is.
What you get is a freezer full of beef for the year, from an animal you know the history of, cut the way you asked for it.
Not locally, we sell direct from the ranch only and every order is collected in person. If you’re weighing it up against what’s in the shops, check the label for “Product of USA”, because a good deal of grass fed beef sold in the US is imported.
Roughly three and three quarter hours each way. It’s the longest run of any of our regular pickup areas, so most San Jose customers order a whole beef and split it with another household to make the trip worthwhile. Bring coolers.
No, we’re pickup only. Every order is collected in person from the butcher shop, and there’s no shipping option.
Plan on 8 to 12 cubic feet for a half beef, or 16 to 22 for a whole. Size up rather than down, packing wastes more space than you’d expect. See our freezer space guide.
Yes, and plenty of people do. We only harvest against a complete whole order, so if you want a half we keep a first come, first served list and pair you up with someone taking the other side. Two households splitting a whole between them works too.
Reserve your 1/2 grass fed beef 🥩 with a $1075 deposit or $2000 for a whole grass fed beef 🥩 order.
