Here’s the part that surprises most people: you’re not buying packages of beef, you’re buying a share of an animal. One of ours, raised on open pasture here on the ranch and harvested right here on our own ground. Nothing is bought in, nothing is shipped in from elsewhere, and nothing sits in a warehouse in between.
You’ve got two options. A whole beef, which fills a freezer for a family for the best part of a year. Or a half, which suits most households and is where the majority of our San Francisco customers start.
We only harvest against a complete whole order, so if you just want a half, no problem, we keep a first come, first served list and pair you up with someone taking the other side. It happens all the time, and plenty of people come as a pair anyway: two families, one animal, split at pickup.
Once you’ve placed your deposit, we book your harvest date.
If you’ve never done this before, say so. We do this every day and will walk you through every decision on the phone. There’s no wrong answer. It’s your beef.
After the harvest date, the butcher will call when it’s cut, wrapped and boxed, and you drive up to collect it. You’ll be dealing with the same people the whole way through.
Because grass fed, grass finished beef isn’t really something you can rely on finding at home. And because there’s a difference between a label and knowing the person who raised it.
Our cattle are on grass their entire lives, never grain finished, no hormones, no antibiotics. They’re harvested between 24 and 30 months, which is slower than the industry runs. That patience is a large part of why the beef tastes the way it does.
It should take you between 3 and 3 and half hours to reach our ranch if you are travelling from San Francisco. The fastest route will be via the I-80 E and I-5 N, it’s important to note though that this route will have a toll on it. In San Francisco get on the US-101 S and follow the I-80 E, I 505 N and I-5 N to Gyle Road in Tehama County. You’ll need to take exit 636 from I-5 N. Continue on Gyle Road and take the CA-99 N to Shasta Blvd and you’ll find our ranch here!
On cost, there are two payments and it’s worth understanding both up front. The animal is paid to us, a deposit locks in your harvest date, and the balance is paid after harvest. Then the cutting, wrapping and packaging is paid straight to the butcher when you collect. All in, a half beef comes to $2,800–$2,900 and a whole to $5,100–$5,200, depending on the size of the animal.
Plan on 8–12 cubic feet for a half, 16–22 for a whole. Size up rather than down. Packing real boxes into a real freezer wastes more room than the arithmetic suggests, and it’s a miserable thing to discover at nine o’clock at night with 400 lbs of beef in the back of the car.
You pay less per pound than you would for grass finished beef in a grocery store, and the difference is biggest on the expensive cuts.
You do pay it all at once rather than a bit each week, and you need the freezer space ready before your beef is.
What you get is a freezer full of beef for the year, from an animal you know the history of, cut the way you asked for it.
Not locally, we sell direct from the ranch only and every order is collected in person. San Francisco has plenty of good butchers, but if you want to buy a whole or half animal direct from the people who raised it, that means the drive north. Ours is born, raised and butchered within about twenty miles of where it was born.
About three and a quarter hours each way. Worth planning: freezer space is the usual sticking point for city customers, so plenty of San Francisco buyers split a whole beef between two households. Bring coolers and clear the boot.
No, we’re pickup only. Every order is collected in person from the butcher shop, and there’s no shipping option.
Plan on 8 to 12 cubic feet for a half beef, or 16 to 22 for a whole. Size up rather than down, packing wastes more space than you’d expect. See our freezer space guide.
Yes, and plenty of people do. We only harvest against a complete whole order, so if you want a half we keep a first come, first served list and pair you up with someone taking the other side. Two households splitting a whole between them works too.
Reserve your 1/2 grass fed beef 🥩 with a $1075 deposit or $2000 for a whole grass fed beef 🥩 order.
